cass1969When I am Old
I will wear Purple!
When I am an old woman,
I shall wear purple - -
With a red hat which doesn't go,
and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension
on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandles,
And say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
and gobble up samples in shops
and press alarm bells
and run with my stick along public railings,
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit!
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at ago,
or only bread and pickles for a week,
and hoard pens and pencils
and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
and pay our rent
and not swear in the street,
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner
and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised
when suddenly I am old,
And start to wear purple!

Still here? Well, don't say I didn't tell you so!
No one does heart-stoppingly erotic stories better than Cassidy Ryan, and Bound by Love is no exception. Previously published in the Bound Brits anthology, this story well deserved to be published on its own. I picked up this book on a day when I had a million other things to do, and thought, "Well, I'll read a few pages." (Don't laugh.) After I finished reading it all the way through, I started back at the beginning and read it again.
Rhys Matthews is an up-and-coming artist. As Bound by Love starts, he's incredibly busy preparing for an upcoming one-man show, but when he receives a note from his sometimes-lover Draven Laird, he's ready to drop everything and go.
Draven and Rhys have been in a casual D/s relationship for two years, casual in that Draven only summons Rhys from time to time, but serious in terms of structured rules of sexual play and increasingly serious in that Rhys has fallen in love with Draven. The agreement is 'no strings attached,' and Rhys knows that if he lets Draven know that he's got feelings, he'll drop him, but he doesn't want anyone else. Draven wants Rhys, too, but he has issues with commitment. These two men have no barriers sexually, but can they break the more difficult emotional barrier brought about by past hurts and fears?
As you read this book, the sexual tension, which starts high when Rhys receives a summons from Draven, only ratchets up, as Draven takes Rhys to his house in the country for the weekend for the first time, where he has a fully equipped dungeon. Things are going so well, till Rhys slips and says just the wrong thing. Is this an irredeemable error?
Ryan brings her characters and their emotions to life in her carefully crafted prose. Even the secondary characters jump colorfully off the page. The lyrical eroticism and attention to detail will catch you up in the story, and you, too, will be sorry when it comes to an end.
